My journey with the Polish language began more than 17 years ago, but just recently I actually published something in Polish.
"Unknown Jewish Poland" appeared as a history supplement of Newsweek magazine, just in time for the long weekend in Poland. The topic of the issue is all about pre-war Poland's Jewish community and features a ton of interesting pieces from my colleagues covering the issues of migration, crime, prostitution, Hasidism and many other fun things.
The piece I wrote, entitled "Jewish health resort", is about the town of Otwock, located near Warsaw. Basically it was a pine forest that turned into a destination for medical tourism. Today it's more of a suburb of the capital city, since it's easily accessible by train or car.
My contribution is based on some research I conducted a while back, but never got to use. I had planned on writing a longer project about tuberculosis sanatoria in East Central Europe, but it never went anywhere unfortunately. Now I've had the chance with this article, and another longer piece that will come out with the Herder Institute's journal, to write about why certain places came to be known as sites of healing.
